Teamwork

We all like to say it’s better to work as a team, and in most cases it is. But what does it really mean?

Is it like a sports team where the combination of physical effort moves towards a common goal? Metaphorically, yes it is. In the work place, teamwork can be key to the success of any business. In most cases, 1 person cannot do everything, regardless of what those Staples commercials say (“Hey, Dave. Good Morning Dave. IT needs you Dave”). Being able to split tasks up among a group can more often than not prove to be highly efficient and beneficial.

Most people enjoy being part of something. Nurturing a team environment will not only grow the it, but the individual as well as it boosts their confidence, encourages interaction with others, and exponentially grows the happiness when success is achieved within the team, as it’s a combination of every member’s happiness. You will often find that the individual members will tend to congregate outside of the professional environment as their relationship with their colleagues improves. Which in turn, feeds the energy back into the professional environment since each member now has a personal connection with the others and an interest in not letting them down and succeeding together. It can also be infections between departments. When department ‘A’ observes how happy and successful department ‘B’ is as they work together, the desire to replicate that is spread. And depending on size of the business, will multiply as time goes on.

But you don’t have to be a large organization to act like one. Teamwork will allow your business to accomplish goals and tasks that give it the outside appearance of a much larger and more organized unit. While this can be beneficial, one must be careful as it can also be detrimental. Appearing larger than you are may set expectations that may not be able to be achieved by a smaller organization, simply based on size, nothing to do with merit or credentials. So continue on with the proverbial “there is no ‘I’ in Team!”

Communication & Technology

Communications takes many forms, especially in the work place and with the technology today. We see the term unified communications a lot and using a single platform to do all of your business communications. But the simple fact of the matter is that unless you make a concerted effort to learn them and use them, all of the widgets in the world are just an extension of your inability to communicate at the end of the day. It seems that a person’s inability to communicate can be amplified when these widgets are available.

So how do you solve this. Frequent meetings? Frequent conference calls? Frequent…? Maybe, but mostly I have found leading by example is the best way. Making the extra effort to arrange frequent calls with those that are not in the immediate office helps a lot. It shows the team that you are committed to just that, the team. It goes beyond the daily tasks and business activities. Being personal opens up the channels to effectively communicate on a more regular basis, in ANY form. It gives a sense of comfort to the other person that you do really care and are not just a drone of the business. Being able to shoot the breeze with your team offers camaraderie and in turn makes everyone want to act more like a team.

Communicating clearly is even more important. If you do not articulate what is needed or wanted, then there might as well be no communication, as it just confuses and muddies any situation. And it goes both ways. You must make sure you are clear to others and make sure you are clear on what they articulate. Taking simple steps and tweaks in your processes will make a huge improvement in how you interact with your team, employees, colleagues, and bosses.

Facebook Timeline – Tell your Company’s Story

On March 30, Facebook will be updating all Pages to the new Timeline layout.  Having control of your branding is crucial.  Therefore, we recommend taking the time to update your page now, before the switch, to avoid the unknown. The good news is we are here to help.  Below I have listed a few of the top cool new features of Facebook Timeline.  Of course there is always more you can do, but this is enough to get you started.  If you read through and are still sighing “ugh, I don’t have time for this,” remember that we have designers on staff ready to help.  Breathe a sigh of relief, pick up the phone and give us a call.

The new Facebook Timeline has really shifted the way businesses can utilize Facebook to their advantage by expressing the personality of the company.  The timeline feature is a better way to tell your company’s story from the day your company was founded until the present time.

Cover Photo:  No longer do you have to rely on a landing / welcome page and small profile picture to show your branding!  Now you can create a 850 x 315px cover image to engage your viewers at first glance.  Use an image that captivates your audience or sends a personal message.  Be creative!  Facebook states that the cover images may NOT contain:

  •     Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”.
  •     Contact info (web address, email, mailing address, phone number) .
  •     Any call to action statements (eg “Book now” or “Tell your friends”).
  •     References to actions such as Like or Share.

Profile Image:  Because your profile image will be your thumbnail on all your posts and in the news feed, make sure you use the most identifiable image associated with your company: your LOGO.  Make the image 180x180px square and don’t forget to adjust your thumbnail so that your logo is clear and completely visible.

Milestones:  This is your chance to tell your story throughout the years!  Dig through those retro images or pull out old branding… use anything personal and showcase big achievements throughout your timeline.  You just started Facebook this year?  So what!  You can add in Milestones from before you joined Facebook to create a fascinating history of your company.

Important Posts:  Once again, choose to take control of your page.  Now that everything is visible, you should go through your posts and decide what you want to show or hide.  You can do this right on your timeline by clicking the pencil (edit) icon, and click “Hide from Page” or you can click on the Admin Panel button in the top left, click “Manage” and then “Use Activity Log.”  The most important posts each week can be pinned to the top of your page (above the fold) by clicking the pencil (edit) icon in the top right corner of the post, then click “Pin to Top.”  This ensures the post will remain at the top for 7 days.  You can also “Highlight” other important posts by clicking the star icon.  You will notice that images are more engaging than text in this layout.  Use that knowledge to your advantage!

As a last little bit of advice, use the preview mode to test at least your profile picture and cover image.  From there you can jump right in and start editing.

Remember that we are always here to help!
